This series of abstract charcoal drawings was created on the first day I was home alone, nine months after UK residents were ordered to “stay at home” due to Covid restrictions. This was a monumental day for me to be alone but for others to be in company.

I seized it with both ‘dirty’ hands. Music was cranked up, I danced and reflected on the year just passed. Joy, loss, new places discovered and being confined to home. My thoughts also turned to the future and beyond the four walls of my studio as the country was opening up. I used one material, charcoal, but different varieties and the intensity of application to capture the spontaneity, unconscious gestures and unintentional shapes. It was a fun day. My intention is for the drawings to not only express physical movement but to evoke emotion in the viewer. There is no singular message and they are totally open to intrepretation.
